Vagonetto

A unique visit into the depths of the earth.

Vagonetto is a very unique ‘park’ located two hundred meters under the earth. These are mines located in the narrow mountain pass between Mount Parnassos and Gionas. Two of the corridors of the mine used for bauxite mining between 1967 and 1972 have been converted into an underground museum that educates visitors about the mining process, mining history and uses of bauxite in everyday life.

The visit, assisted by audiovisual tour and film projections, starts from a small museum hall where we learn about the ore, the mines and the locals who worked therein. With the help of interactive virtual reality games, visitors «enter» into the mine and dig out bauxite from limestone. The third and most exciting part of the tour, is the tour down the actual mine. There, below the dripping ceilings of water forming stalagmites, visitors travel through time watching the mining of bauxite and its modernization through the decades.
